When selling or buying per-owned cars there a specific documentation that must be obtained. Proof is required and the transfer proves rightful owner and registrations along with the title can all be done together. Location, Cost and other restrictions are all important to take into account when getting a New York car title transfer.



If buying at a dealership this transfer step is usually done at that place of business. Then there would be an issue temporary registration and licence plates. Have insurance information readily available or preferred insurer and if there is a insurance broker that is preferred than direct the sales person to communicate directly with them. Policy number and drivers licence are mandatory.



Being new to New York and once residence is established the resident has 30 days to transfer the title. Insurance must also be New York based in order to get to obtain the ownership. Keeping in mind its probably best to go ahead to get these matters taken care of right away as a precautionary measure. There are separate rules for residents that live in NY and that buy out of state with can be inquired about directly at the DMV.



Buying from a private party there are more steps involved. The buyer needs a bill of sale, title filled by seller, odometer, damage disclosure, sellers signature, NY id card, Registration title application, proof of DOB, statement of transaction and of course payment for titling. There is a full list of documents that need to be in order which with proper execution can be a simple task.



When it comes to dishing out the money for the title, expect to pay around fifty dollars. Of course not forgetting there are other fees like the governments cut, a plate fee, registering and a few other costs. On a bill of sale at a dealer they can explain all charges and all have to be listed.



If there is a willed vehicle, gift or other family type transfer there are some different forms that need to be obtained. The Department of motor vehicles or website the information can all be found on there according to any given situation. Taxes and other fees may not be charged however in some situations it must be family in order to quality for exemptions.



Obtaining a secondary title for extra precaution is not a bad idea. Be prepared to pay about a twenty dollar change either with a money order or by personal check. There are two ways to get the back up ownership, in person or by mail or the only avenues as online request are not able to be fulfilled due to restrictions for safety and fraud. Having a copy with your insurance and in a family safe is recommended.



Getting all information ahead of time can save frustrating and necessary extra visits between the seller and purchaser. Dealerships offer these services but often for an extra cost however at the same token usually takes a licensed dealer 24-48 hours while this may be a much lengthier process for an individual. Buying or selling privately having all the right documents in order and filled out correctly will save time and rejected applications.
