Components Of Traffic Signal UPS

By Marci Glover

Power crisis has become rampant nearly everywhere. A single occurrence maybe very fatal, especially when it hits roads that lack traffic signal UPS. This may cause collision of vehicles due to the confusion that ensues. These back up machines always help avoid such incidents by taking up the responsibility of supplying power to the control lights. This machine is, therefore, worth investing in since it saves many lives in case of emergencies.

These machines are usually of two types; single conversion and double conversion. The single conversion device is designed with the sole aim of providing pure sine waves and sufficient power back up for the now complex traffic control system. It is designed in a way such that, incandescent lamps can still be used with it. Furthermore, it allows parallel connection of batteries and eliminates the need for heavy batteries connected in series.

This machine runs for a minimum of 8 hours, has an all-inclusive alarm system, an LCD display that is programmed, an event counter, an adjustable flash timer, a non-compulsory automatic transfer switch to generator, ability to operate using any type of batteries, surge and lighting protection device and Ethernet capability.

The double conversion version has many different designs; all of which designed to help handle traffic related problems. With regards to size, there are three different categories of this equipment; 1100 W, 700 W and 1400 W. They all emit seamless waves continuously. There is also an online make of this device that gives absolute power conditioning. It also filters in addition to providing protection against surge and spikes.

Among the features of this double conversion device are; continuous Ethernet capability, an all-inclusive LCD digital display for every operating functions and an advanced alarm system which allows localized supervision. Other features include; more than 8 hours run time, adjustable flash timer, compatibility with generators, automatic transfer switch and capability to use of the shelf batteries among other features.

The elementary module for power management in the machine is attached to a by-pass for maintenance wrapped on it. This by-pass is for enabling removal and replacement of the original module without disrupting the machine. A more advanced version of this equipment can be programmed to move the operation of the UPS back to the utility generator from the auxiliary generator when the former returns. This device also has a by-pass wrapped on it to do the same job it does in the earlier make.

The devices above are normally put in cabinets for security reasons. The cabinet protects the machine itself from hazards; rain, dirt and mechanical damage. These cabinets are most made from thick aluminum alloys capable of providing rigid and strong protection. Some cabinets are made from stainless steel. The features of these cabinets include; three point latching system, fan kit controlled by thermostats, many mounting options, door locks, doors with piano-like hinges and many provisions for use of optional generator.

This machine is usually fitted with backup batteries. The models used are mostly lead-acid ones fitted with special epoxy to eliminate leakages. They are normally designed to last for ten years. Manufacturers use an advanced technology to provide high rates and short-term power.
