Ford Announces Explorer Sport Performance Model Of SUV

By Cornelius Nunev

The Ford Explorer is in many ways the poster child of the SUV boom of the past 2 decades. An incredible number of them have been sold, either in their old guise or the brand new cross-over based version. However, Ford has had it with the vehicle being unbelievably family-oriented and is launching a performance edition, the Explorer Sport.

Every person had one

In the 1990s, families getting cars turned from the minivan to the SUV, as fuel was cheap and plentiful and some of them happened to be fairly capable off-road. The poster child of the SUV boom used to be the Ford Explorer, which became almost as familiar a sight as the typical suburban family home as a golden retriever.

People started to stop using gasoline guzzling vehicles pretty fast when fuel prices went up. They decided to go for a family-friendly crossover SUV that would not take as much fuel to power. Now, the Explorer Sport is Ford's brand new car. It hopes to take the family part right out of the automobile.

A huge motor

The new Ford Explorer Sport will have a 3.5-liter V-6 with 350 horsepower, according to Inside Line. This is a massive upgrade from the basic 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder motor with 240 horsepower that the Explorer currently has. A V-6 option is available for the current model, but it's a 290-horsepower 3.6 liter.

The Explorer Sport will get 16 miles per gallon city and 22 mpg highway. It has a four-wheel drive option if you need it and a Terrain Management System with traction control for different weather conditions. It has a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Explore your wallet

However, the Sport is also slated to be the top of the Explorer range and therefore will likely cost in excess of $40,000. However, the more luxuriously equipped Explorers, according to USA Today, sell the very best. More than 40 percent of all Explorer buyers choose the Limited trim, which starts at $39,505 after destination charge.

There are a lot of SUVs that are about the same size and cost less to buy, but they are all huge gasoline guzzlers. With the Toyota Sequoia or Nissan Motors Armada, you will get less than 20 mpg highway. The Dodge Durango R/T gets three fewer miles per gallon and two fewer highway mpg than the Ford projected mileage and costs $35,795. The vehicle comes with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. That same motor is also available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee that costs less than $40,000, dependent upon the style you choose. It gets 360 horsepower and gets 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.
