Cleaning Your Car's Upholstery

By Cornelius Nunev

There are all kinds of things that can get your car's upholstery filthy, but truly only one that can clean it. That one thing is diligence. Here's how you can clean vehicle upholstery in a diligent manner.

Keep stuff out of car

When you are driving, you need to avoid doing anything besides driving. Give your full attention to the road or pull over to get something you need. When you make an effort to use other things such as the phone, reading materials and food, you could end up spilling or leaving a mess much more often.

Anything needs vacuumed

Just like you regularly vacuum your home, you need to regularly vacuum your car. Vacuum underneath all the mats and on top of them if they need it. Use the different parts to make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. This day-to-day maintenance is important. It makes it harder for dirt to set in when the upholstery fibers are upright, which happens when you vacuum.

You can shield your vehicle with stain repellents such as Scotchguard. Even if you think it is just a little bit costly, it is worth it in the end.

Work on leather too

You will only need leather cleaner for your car if you get a deep set spot from something such as ink or nail polish. The cleaner and a soft sponge can get it out. Always keep away from goods that are not meant for leather though. One thing to always remember is that leather cleaner is not necessary for regular maintenance. A damp towel works well, especially since leather is usually water resistant already. Just clean up messes quickly, and also you will not have any problems.

Homemade washing solution

When taking care of rubber and vinyl upholstery surfaces, you might want to invest in interior protectant since both get damaged in the sun very easily. You may want specialty cleaners also. For those who have some baking soda around, you can put it on a damp rag to clean vinyl. Do not forget to rinse with dishwashing detergent and water after that though. It is a homemade remedy to help.

More about upholstery washing

Use cool water to dilute coffee spills. Soak in glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes if the spot does not go away

If you are facing greasy stains, make sure you test the remedy in a small area and then use it. You can just put paint thinner and salt or cornmeal on the stain overnight. After the night is over, vacuum it clean

Ink stains come right out with hairspray or salt

Getting rid of vomit does not have to be difficult. Just put club soda or baking soda on it to dilute the acids in it

Getting rid of blood is easy with dry laundry starch and cold water mixtures. Just put it over the blood and let dry. Vacuum in the morning

Dilute alcohol spills with cold water

When brightening fading carpet, all you need is a mixture of half-cup of ammonia and one pint of water. This only works if you do not have wool carpet. Just sponge the carpet with the mixture after vacuuming

Getting rid of fleas and flea eggs will take two applications of Borax. Just let it sit for an hour and vacuum. It will even get rid of smelly carpet

Hate carpet static? Mix five parts water and one part liquid fabric softener and spray on carpet upholstery

Hate carpet imprints? Put a damp towel over the spot, and press with an iron set to low heat. Do not let the iron sit, as synthetic fibers can melt

Keep the mats on your vehicle looking good with liquid shoe wax polish
