Using Old Tires To Make A Garden

By George Dodson

If you grew up working in your parents garden, you know how much you can save in fruits and vegetables. An easy thing to do and not an expensive one either. The enjoyment of having fresh produce from your own garden is great. In addition, you can grow your own herbs. Store bought produce cannot be as good as that which you grow fresh from the garden. You also get the satisfaction of a produce, you have created yourself. Also you are the person controlling what is added to the production. You know it is fresh, natural, and without preservatives.

Lots of people just dont have the space for lots of fruit and vegetable growing. Therefore people need to look at alternatives. One possible answer to this problem is to plant your garden in smaller spaces. A great reason for this is that you can cater for your needs but still plant more for later harvests. Try planting in old tires, it can really work.

Old tires are available free at many outlets. You might them for only $5.00 in other places. On average all you will need is maybe four or five for a good bit of planting. But large installations may require over ten tires.

To some people the old tires may not look so good. Maybe the neighbors will object? Of course you can always cover them in ways that will improve how they look. Setting the tires in some wooden boxes would make them look better. Try making them look better by cutting the tires to look like flowers and then paint them. The rims of the tires could be used as a stand.

Dig down to a depth of 4inches to prepare the soil, once you have decided on a suitable spot. The roots of plants need to grow as deep as possible to be healthy. Good soil is essential for planting. You can buy this at Home Depot, Lowes or your local hardware store. Follow the instructions on planting the seed and fertilize well. Dont over water, but do water regularly. You will have a small but adequate garden that will fulfill your needs very well. Plenty of money will be saved as you wont have to buy your fresh produce from a store.
