Fixing Cars With An Exhaust Manifold Leak Repair Kit

By Jaclyn Hurley

Some people like to fix their cars themselves, while others feel that it is better to leave the car with a professional. For someone who prefers to do the work themselves, an exhaust manifold leak repair kit might be one of the things they will find useful to keep in the garage. This is because the manifolds of a vehicle do give trouble when they are worn, and they must be fixed as soon as possible. The manifolds could have leaks or cracks that are causing car trouble.

In most cases, a problem in a vehicle can be quite easily detected by someone who is familiar with mechanics. There are almost always symptoms that should not be ignored. It can be difficult, however, to assess the specific part of the car that is troublesome, as often the same symptoms are presented for several different faults. Regardless, you can suspect trouble with the manifolds if you can clearly smell gas in the emissions. It will be a strong odor that is not usually there.

When you detect this smell, you will know that something within the vehicle needs to be repaired. However, to be sure, you can take your vehicle for an emissions test. This is usually done by a mechanic, and will show if the emissions of your vehicle are normal or problematic. If the car seems faulty, you can leave it with the mechanic so that he can find the problem.

Another way of knowing that something is wrong is to listen to the engine. It may be making unusual noises, which could be similar to a soft banging sound nearby the exhaust. You may or may not hear these sounds when you are driving, but if you know about them then you can listen out for them.

Many people are able to change the gaskets of their vehicle's manifolds themselves. The first advice, however, is to let the engine cool down so that you can safely touch any part of the vehicle. With a wrench, you should be able to undo the bolts that are holding the manifolds to the cylinder head.

Tap the manifold with a mallet of rubber if it does not want to come loose from the cylinder head. Although the manifolds will be loosened, they do not need to be taken off the vehicle completely, you are just trying to expose the gasket. You can know get rid of the worn out gasket and put in a new one. It is recommended not to use gasket sealer on the new part.

You can now refasten the manifold with its original bolts. The gasket needs to be eased into place, therefore, do not tighten the bolts too quickly. You also don't want the new gasket to warp. To help with this task, you can purchase kits that will contain all the tools and accessories you need, otherwise, you can employ a mechanic.

Manifolds are most often of a cast-iron material, but can be of a tubular variety as well. The first type is easier to fix, while the second is better replaced. Cast-iron is durable, but can still have faults from time to time.
